Hands-on with the new-ish handset

Yes I know we’ve seen the T-Mobile myTouch 3G with a different operator logo on it in the UK, but not in that lovely red or with those lovely backplates.

The blackplates will cost $15 and can be customised to include any photo you want, a T-Mobile spokesperson told us (the black security stickers aren’t included).

Still, with visual voicemail, Wi-Fi, 3G and a touchscreen T-Mobile US fans should dive right in as the company has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it has no plans to bring the HTC Hero, the third HTC android handset, to the US.

Is Apple road-testing next-gen device?

It seems those September refresh rumours for new iPods, and in particular a new iPod touch, are only going to grow over the summer.

The latest “evidence” that Apple is preparing the arguably inevitable-at-some-point new models is from online logs.

PinchMedia an analytics company, reports that they have started to see more devices with the “iPod 3,1″ version number via App Store applications.

The current iPod touch has a model number of 2,1, so this would suggest Apple is testing the next-gen device, and its app-compatibility.

The firm says a 3,1 device was first picked up in late April, but have increased recently:

“As of this date, a few dozen distinct “iPod 3,1″ devices have run around two dozen different applications using Pinch Analytics”.

The new touch is also rumoured to be due to get a camera module.

Focusing on myTouch 3G for now

T-Mobile has said that it has “no plans” to bring the newly announced HTC Hero to the US, instead deciding to concentrate on the launch of the myTouch G1 (aka the HTC Magic) at the moment.

The news is likely to come as a blow to T-Mobile US customers who might have been hoping to get the new HTC handset complete with the HTC Sense interface on the network.

However HTC has confrimed to Pocket-lint that the HTC Hero will get a US launch later in the year

“We are bringing it to the US,” the company’s US CEO told us refused to be drawn on which operator in a candid talk at the launch of the new myTouch 3G handset.

Still no sign of the Hero

T-Mobile US has announced that it’s HTC Magic variant, the myTouch 3G, will cost $199 when it goes up for pre-order in the US on Wednesday.

“Users who order before the 28 July will get the handset before others,”Denny Marie Post, the chief marketing officer for the company confirmed at the New York launch event.

The phone, which the company expects to ship in “early August” will be the company’s second Android handset, and be a rebadged HTC Magic first launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Opting for the now older touchscreen only handset from HTC rather than the newer HTC Hero announced in the UK last month, the myTouch 3G, features the same specs as the HTC Magic available on Vodafone with a 3.2-inch HVGA touch-screen display and virtual keyboard.

Also present is a 3.2-megapixel camera, a music player with a pre-installed 4GB microSD memory card, and video capabilities. Wi-Fi and 3G, as the name suggests will be present.

T-Mobile US has also announced that it will be offering something called the T-Mobile App Pack that users will be able to download if they can’t be bothered to find Apps themselves.

T-Mobile in the UK has already confirmed to Pocket-lint that the new myTouch 3G won’t be coming to the UK. It has instead opted to go for the newer HTC Hero which it has rebranded as the G1 Touch.

Watch while you can

If you were planning on watching a web stream of Michael Jackson’s memorial service on iPlayer, you need to get in there fast.

Rights restrictions mean that the ceremony at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles will only be legally viewable until 6pm today on the BBC’s watch again service.

Of course, there’s currently over 6,000 people sharing a 2GB 1080p HD video of the event on the Pirate Bay, and no doubt it’ll keep popping up on YouTube for some time.

Still, if you want to watch it without infringing copyright, then you’ll need to get your skates on. It ends at 6pm tonight. Don’t be late.

Order OS, get free PC "health check"

PC World has announced the launch of its pre-order service for Microsoft Windows 7.

Claiming to offer customers a discount of over 50% (it’s actually Microsoft’s discount to offer) the retailer says its pre-order page will go live from 15 July.

From the 15th, Windows 7 Home Premium will be available for £49.99 while Professional will be on offer £99.99.

Anyone placing an order for the new OS will also be entitled to a free The TechGuys PC health check, worth £29.99.

The Windows 7 pre-order service will be available across the DSGi group which includes www.pcworld.co.uk, www.currys.co.uk and www.dixons.co.uk.

Orange looking good, O2 less so

Ofcom has published some maps that it cooked up earlier this year, which predict 3G coverage from the five major mobile network operators – O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone and 3.

The maps were put together by estimating coverage from theoretical predictions, and show where customers have the possibility of making a 3G call outside. The regulator goes to great pains to say that they’re not a guarantee of coverage, just a guide.

Still, it’s interesting to compare the networks’ coverage. It’s no surprise that 3’s is by far the best. Orange’s is rather impressive too – nearly matching the newest entrant. O2’s is very weak and no doubt causes some frustration for iPhone owners. Vodafone and T-Mobile’s networks aren’t particularly incredible either.

One thing that’s interesting is how much of the coast surrounding the UK is covered. If you have difficulty getting 3G on your handset, then moving to a houseboat moored in the English Channel might be your best bet.

Update: Orange’s VP IT&N, Pete Marsden, has commented: “Orange currently offers 3G coverage to over 93% of the UK population alongside more than 99% population coverage on our 2G network to provide the UK’s largest integrated data network”.

“We continue to spend more than £1 million per day on growing and developing our network to ensure our customers can make calls, email and browse the internet whenever and wherever they want”.

Featuring a 3.5-inch touch screen, the satnav offers lane guidance, safety camera alerts and fuel price info which comes as a 3-month trial, thereafter costing you around £3 a month.

IQ Routes is TomTom’s software offering that claims to know the best routes depending on the time of day, or day of the week. So, it will offer a different route at 3pm on a Sunday than it would at rush hour on a weekday morning.
