Today we have a cut-price laptop in the form of the Toshiba Satellite L300 1G8. The lower-spec Satellite L300 version received an 8/10 score in our review back in July 2008 so we thought this might be worth a look.

Currently selling for £359.99 at Cdiscount it’s down from an RRP of £499.99. The laptop gets an Intel Pentium Dual core T3400 processor, 4GB RAM and 160GB hard drive.

The 15.4-inch 1280 x 800 WXGA screen will be displaying Vista Home Premium and you’ll also get a built-in webcam.

Connections include three USB 2.0 ports, an ExpressCard slot and Wi-Fi but unfortunately no Bluetooth, whilst the battery is cited as lasting “up to 2.5 hours”.

Hands-on with the new laptop

Toshiba laptops can turn up in the funniest of places, however that didn’t stop Pocket-lint jumping on the U500 announced earlier in the month to get a handful of hands on pics for you to enjoy.

The Toshiba Satellite U500 will start around $699.99 and feature a 13.3-inch screen, intel Pentium processor t4200, 4GB of DDR2 800Mhz memory, 320GB hard drive, DVD-SuperMulti drive with LabelFlash support and built-in wireless n connectivity.

Coming in that really black black, you’ll be able to also get it in white for those not looking for the Darth Vadar look.

Those looking to spec out their machine to the max can opt for the top of the range configuration which will come with a faster intel processor and bigger 400GB hard drive.

Gaming laptop gets a paint job

If the only thing stopping you from splashing out on Alienware’s £1699 and up M17x gaming laptop was that it wasn’t available in red, then today is your lucky day.

The company, or more accurately, Dell, its parent company is offering the high-end portable gaming rig in red – “nebula red” to be precise – as well as space black and lunar silver.

There’s no word yet on what premium the paint job will demand in the UK, but we’re hearing you’re looking at around $99 more for the rouge-tinted option in the States.

"High-quality multimedia features"

Toshiba has announced more info on specs for its Satellite range of consumer laptops that will go on sale in the UK from late July.

All models are said to be energy efficient with an “Eco Utility Tool” for power saving options while the A500 and U500 models offer multi-touch controls on the trackpad.

* With a 16-inch Toshiba TruBrite display, the Satellite A500 combines a 16:9 aspect ratio with a high definition resolution of 1366×768 – making it the perfect platform on which to enjoy movies and games on the move.

* All models feature high-quality Harman Kardon stereo speakers that provide full-bodied audio and all models offer a super multi dual-layer DVD drive. Selected models also feature a slot loading DVD drive.

* Powered by the latest Intel or AMD processing technology, the Satellite A500 comes with a high-capacity integrated hard disk drive of up to 500GB, providing generous amounts of space for multimedia content libraries.

* Eco utility tool and multi-touch control.

* The Satellite A500 comes with a sleek and elegant external design, featuring a unique Toshiba Fusion finish based on In-Mold Rolling technology. A choice of two designs will be offered, with a premium chrome-trim model also available, in addition to the silver trim variation.
