Windows 7 has Critical Showstopper Bug?

Reports of a “show stopper” bug in Windows 7 is capable of delaying the planned roll out, and Microsoft has blamed a chip controller issue rather than admit there is a critical but in the Windows 7 chkdsk/r tool which could well cause a memory leak which in turn could cause a PC to seize and crash.

After the president of Microsoft’s Windows division, Steven Sinofsky, took on bloggers and online forums that jumped on Windows 7 and the Microsoft development and testing process. Windows 7 customers have been advised to update their chipset drivers to the present driver supplied by their motherboard maker.

Apparently, Sinofsky has said that Microsoft has not reproduced the crash and has not experienced any crashes with chkdsk on the stack and took particular exception to the terms “critical bug” and “showstopper,” in Windows 7.

Q4 to see ARM bases Snapdragon and Tegra smartbooks hit market

According to a somewhat unreliable source we are to see numerous smartbooks with ARM Snapdragon or Tegra processors come onto the market form the likes of Acer, Pegatron Technology, Compal Electronics, Foxconn Electronics and Inventec Appliances in Q4 of 09.

Acer is believed to be pushing out Android and ARM based smartbooks that are expected to be unveiled in Q4 while Asus has noted that ARM based smartbook demand is still not strong and thus will launch their products in November or December.

Mobinnova will start volume shipments of their 8.9 inch ARM based Tegra smartbooks by the year’s end and has gained orders from Europe and the United States.

Sony has unveiled a pocket sized ebook reader with a price tag under $200 and Sony is touting this ebook reader as “most affordable dedicated reading device on the market.” The new device has been named the Sony Reader Pocket Edition and features enough memory for approximately 350 books.

The Sony Reader Pocket Edition will become available in 3 colours, silver, rose and blue and sports a 5 inch electronic ink display that delivers dark grey text on light grey background, but lacks an expansion slot for a memory card.

If memory expansion is shown to be needed Sony will introduce a 6 inch touch screen device which will feature expansion slots for Memory Stick or SD cards and will carry a price tag of $299.

XP Mode for Windows 7 unveiled

Microsoft has unveiled the public release candidate for XP Mode which allows Windows 7 customers maintain compatibility with some mission critical Windows XP apps. XP Mode is a virtual Windows XP SP3 environment that runs under Windows virtual PC and is targeted at small to medium businesses.

The director of Desktop Virtualization and Microsoft Desktop Optimisation Pack, Scott Woodgate has stated that some misconceptions have arisen concerning XP Mode since the beta launch by Microsoft in April, and several customers are not aware that many XP apps run well on Windows 7.

Several experts have noted that running XP Mode on Windows 7 can double security software requirements for PC’s and thus shows a bigger target for attackers. Microsoft states XP Mode works well on new PCs.
