Low power usage in standby and recyclable
Epson to offer TX510FN world's most eco-friendly printer 0

Epson is set to unleash its Stylus Office TX510FN upon the world in a couple of months, but we’ve gotten our hands on some early details about this all-in-one device and it looks set to save a lot of money on electricity for those that leave their printer on standby, as it only draws a mere 0.25W in standby mode.

87% of the printer can also be recycled, to further its environmental friendliness. Epson claims that this makes the TX510FN the most environmentally-friendly commercially available printer to date.

The TX510FN is a fairly feature packed all-in-one printer and it should appeal to anyone who’s looking for an affordable printer for the smaller office.

Apart from being able to print up to 38 pages a minute at 5760 x 1440 dpi, it also has a 1200 x 2400 dpi scanner with a 30 page automatic document feeder. It also has a built in colour fax, an Ethernet port for attaching it to the office network for easy sharing and a two line status LED display.

Cost-wise it’s also quite affordable with a retail price which should be around £109. Considering that the current equivalent model is selling for £130, it looks like a pretty good deal for those that are looking for an energy saving and environmentally friendly all-in-one inkjet printer.

Bigger screens and more multi-touch
New touchscreen technology opens door for Apple iPhone tablet 0

The currently popular netbook might have to make way for small, portable touch tablet PCs following the news that one of the biggest names in the industry has announced an 8-inch touchscreen suitable for such devices.

Synaptics, one of the largest touchscreen makers in the industry, has announced its latest touchscreen technology offering, ClearPad 3000, promising 10-finger multi-touch support to device makers across the world, in addition to support for a much larger screen than they are used to.

Although the company’s technology strategist Andrew Hsu refused to be drawn on which companies would be taking the new technology in an interview with Pocket-lint, the move opens up the possibility of a giant iPhone like device for surfing the Internet or playing games.

However, before gadget fans try to put one and one together to make four over rumours of an Apple iPhone touchscreen-focused styled netbook, Hsu says that he isn’t expecting the technology to be seen in a device just yet.

“It would still be very expensive to create a device with an 8-inch touchscreen,” Hsu confirmed.

We will keep you posted.

Hands on with the geocaching GPS device
Garmin Oregon 550t 0

If you think you’ve seen the Garmin Oregon 550t somewhere before that’s because you have.

The new GPS from Garmin for geocachers and outward types comes in virtually the same casing as the previous Garmin Oregon 400t, but adds a 3.2 megapixel digital camera on the back and adds a spot of red in the design.

We are double checking with Garmin, but it looks like the screen has finally got a boost in power as well, noticeably brighter than the 400t

The waterproof Oregon 550 is angled at those looking for an easy-to-use, multipurpose GPS device. On the camera side of things, there’s autofocus and 4x digital zoom, and the device automatically geotags each photo with the location of where it was taken.

With just 850MB of internal memory, there’s a microSD card slot for expansion, and pictures taken can be transferred to a PC via USB for printing, or to be stored and shared online via the myGarmin.com service that offers direct Picasa links.

On the GPS side of things, the new handheld offers a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and HotFix satellite prediction, while the built-in barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. Users can store up to 2000 waypoints, 200 routes and a tracklog of up to 10000 points and 200 saved tracks.

Due before the end of the year
Spotify recruiting for US launch 0

The big question that everyone’s been asking Spotify since it launched, other than “how are you going to make some money?” is “when are you going to launch in the USA?”.

The Observer newspaper has revealed that founder Daniel Ek told them that he’s hiring employees and seeking office space for a launch in the US in the “third or fourth quarter” of 2009. That isn’t far off, by our reckoning, and could be timed to match the 1-year anniversary of its UK launch in October last year.

However, Ek admitted – as he has before – that his company might struggle for profitability before the end of the year. “We still hope to do that, but given the recession and so on, it might take a little longer. It may be next year”. He’s confident: “Why would I go to the US and try to get more extensive licences if I had trouble covering our costs in Europe?”.

In the States Spotify will face fierce competition from Microsoft’s yet-to-be-launched streaming music service as well as companies that operate only in the US, like Pandora. However, Spotify is still eagerly anticipated.

We’ll bring you more details of the launch when we get them.
