Fancy a day out in Swindon?
Museum of Computing re-opens this weekend 0

18 months after it closed, the re-opening of the UK’s first dedicated Museum of Computing takes place tomorrow, Saturday 8 August, in its new premises at Theatre Square in Swindon.

The Museum’s latest exhibition, with hundreds of exhibits, “traces the evolution of computing beyond the mainframe; through desktop PCs at work and at home, portables, arcade games, games consoles, handhelds and mobile devices”.

There’s also the “Pong to Playstation” Zone allows visitors to try their hand at working vintage games consoles with Pong, Pacman, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros and Space Invaders.

Unusual items highlighted as on display include a 1989 Nintendo Power Glove with early motion-controlled sensor tech, Intel’s full-size, real-life surfboard with an inbuilt tablet and touchscreen computer and a Science of Cambridge Mark 14 with a calculator style LED display, the first computer designed by Sir Clive Sinclair.

With funding from Intel, and run by volunteers, the Museum, which is twice the size of its previous venue, will initially open every Saturday from 9.30am to 5pm.

Admission fees are £7.00 for a family ticket, £3.50 for adults and £2.50 for kids, although children under 5 go free.

The Museum is in Swindon town centre at 6-7 Theatre Square, Swindon SN1 1QN, at the top of Regent Street opposite the new Central Library. There’s more info, including special events, to be found at www.museumofcomputing.org.uk.

November launch for ported title
Modern Warfare coming to Nintendo Wii 0

Grown-up Wii gamers will be pleased to hear that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has been announced for the Nintendo console.

Just a news flash at this stage, Activision has said it will release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on Wii on 10 November, in conjunction with the launch of Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2.

Ported to Wii by Treyarch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will bring to Nintendo fans the “gripping modern-day action-thriller” that sees gaming action as both a US Marine and British SAS soldier.

No game rating or pricing has been announced – we will keep you posted.

jonathan_kromrey_holdem

If you play Texas Hold ‘Em on the iPhone, you know Jonathan Kromrey, the former games producer at Apple having worked on that title. His new title isn’t a game, but a position, head of Apple Gaming for Namco, producer of 80s’ nostalgia games like PAC-MAN, Dig Dug and Galaga.

According to Macworld, Kromrey will be busy. Namco will have “five games shipping in August, and five more to go before the year is out,” though no titles are named. However, a slightly more informative interview at the Washington Post states “some new IP” will be coming, though again no names.

Kromrey will also be overseeing the addition of features like voice recognition and multi-player in new games, as well as updating released games to better utilize iPhone OS 3.0. This means features like accessing the iTunes library during gameplay and Facebook Connect support.

Kromrey also stated that Namco is not interested in ad-supported games, preferring to develop games where price determines content. If this means “lite” versions, great, but as a gamer who watched with horror the In-App Purchase system demo, I fear a gaming future of being micro-transacted to death.

Just say no to buying dual fighters in Galaga.

Aspergers sufferer to be trialed in the States
Freegary.org.uk 0

UFOlogist and hacker Gary McKinnon has failed in his attempts to avoid being extradited to the USA to face charges of hacking into Pentagon computers, which carries a potential sentence of 60 years.

McKinnon’s appeal asked Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, to hold his trial in Britain. His supporters argue that it should take place in the UK because the hacking took place in his flat in Wood Green, North London.

The man hacked into 97 computers, and left a message saying “I will continue to disrupt”. The US government claims that repairs cost them $700,000. He suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, and his family say that the extradition could put him at risk of psychosis or suicide.

McKinnon himself says that he wakes up every morning “feeling as though someone has taken a sledgehammer to my chest during the night”. Over 100 MPs and a number of celebrities backed his cause, but their efforts came to nothing. The trial, now confirmed for the States, will take place in due course.
