Hot enough for teacher?

Next up in the series of Guitar Hero games is Guitar Hero 5, but shortly after that, Guitar Hero: Van Halen will be showing up. Aiming for release in early 2010, it’ll have 25 Van Halen tracks, as well as a few others from bands like Queen, Weezer, blink-182, Foo Fighters, The Offspring and Queens of the Stone Age.

Activision has released a trailer for the game, featuring all the jump-splits and rock moves you could ever want. Looks like more Guitar Hero to us, but we were never massive Van Halen fans. Were you? If so, what’s the track you’d love to play most in GH:VH? Let us know in the comments.

NEWS: Xbox Avatars for Guitar Hero 5

Activision confirms import

Activision has confirmed that Xbox avatars will be playable in its forthcoming Guitar Hero 5 – the latest in the long series of music games. It means that you’ll be able to rock out alongside Lars Ümlaüt and Judy Nails.

You’ll also be able to customize that avatar further in Guitar Hero 5’s “create-a-rocker” mode, which will let you add clothing and accessories that are a little more rock’n'roll than the Xbox defaults.

As previously reported on Pocket-lint, Guitar Hero 5 has 85 tracks from more than 80 bands, 25 of whom have never been in a music game before. You’ll also be able to combine any number of guitarists, bassists, vocalists and drummers to match whatever instruments you have.

Coming soon music game takes star turn

DJ Jazzy Jeff has been announced for the turntable version of Guitar Hero – DJ Hero.

Joining DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip, Grandmaster Flash, DJ AM and others, DJ Jazzy Jeff will become a playable character in the game.

The DJ will also provide exclusive mixes of Tears for Fears’ “Shout” vs. Eric B. & Rakim “Eric B. Is President” and LL Cool J “Rock the Bells” vs. The Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra “Bittersweet Symphony”.

Hit play on the video above to see the musician describing the news as “a dream come true”.

NEWS: Harmonix launches Rock Band Network

Get your band’s music in the game

Harmonix has announced that it’s launched “Rock Band Network”, an attempt to get more content into the Rock Band franchise, to see off competition from Neversoft’s Guitar Hero.

The new service will let unsigned acts upload their songs to the Xbox Live Marketplace, so that anyone will be able to buy it. All bands need to do is create a MIDI representation of the song, record it to an acceptable quality level, and then submit it for peer review. If accepted, it’ll go live.

The new system will also allow record companies to get their music into the game quicker. Creators set their own price, with a floor of 50 cents and a ceiling of $3, and will receive 30% of any revenues generated. Harmonix says that it decided to create the system because it wasn’t able to create the tracks it wanted ingame fast enough.

“Once we flip on the infrastructure, we can go from a few dozen people capable of doing this work to hundreds of people or more. We can ramp up by a factor of 10 or more the rate of production of content”, said Harmonix founder/CEO Alex Rigopulos.

And, of course, once consumers have their favourite songs in Rock Band format, they’re arguably less likely to go out and buy Guitar Hero. Tracks created using the service, however, will for now only be available on the Xbox 360 version of the game.

The service will launch later this year, but if you’re keen and want to get in there as fast as possible, then grab yourself a copy of the Reaper Digital Audio Workstation software that the company will be using, and start putting your songs together.

Worthy of the "greatest hits" title?

Ah, Guitar Hero. Where would the world of rhythm-rocking be without thee? Well, 14 iterations of the game later we’re sitting on the precipice of Guitar Hero 5, wondering exactly what else the genre can bring to the world of plastic music peripherals designed to present those without the inclination to actually “learn” an instrument with an output for their dormant rock-god persona.

Greatest Hits does in truth seem like a natural progression for the series. Most bands have waited far less time before releasing a cash-cow compilation and such is the wealth of music available since the first game, the relatively late adoption of a mainstream audience and introduction of multiple instruments, it would almost seem foolish not to “cash in” on the franchise at this point.

This should not suggest that Activision’s stop-gap release is purely an opportunity to generate money however, as there are plenty of reasons to buy this compilation even despite the significant price-tag. Greatest Hits introduces Wii gamers to the first few titles in the series and offers everyone else the opportunity to rock out with drums and vocals to some of the classic hits from the early games.

Admittedly, the choice of tracks will not be to everyone’s taste and you’d be hard pushed to find a fan who agrees that these truly are the “greatest hits” from the early games, but the opportunity to play along to 48 master-tracks should be too much to pass up, particularly for hardcore fans.

Aside from the advantages highlighted above, this new version has taken a careful approach to the game’s structure, and while nothing has really changed in terms of general game play it mixes the build of World Tour with arguably the best game in the series, Heroes of Rock, and the recent Guitar Hero Metallica. Gone is the money-earning approach in relation to gig-unlocking, and reintroduced is a series of mini set-lists that require an accumulation of stars to progress to further songs in career mode.

This certainly makes the game more approachable and to boot, all of the songs are available instantly through Quick Play, which should prove satisfying to those who wish to dip in and out of the “best-of” compilation for party games with friends.

The Music Studio, online play, character customisation and duels are present and correct, along with the ability to create your own rocker based on a range of music styles and designs. The lack of DLC downloads is the main omission, which for some may be a serious disappointment, and it would have been nice to see Activision make the rest of the previous hits available via download to round off a collection.

As it stands, you’ll need to be happy with the setlist provided and though some may bemoan the exclusion of more classic tracks, the ability to expand on the full-instrument from World Tour should be a bigger pull.

NEWS: Logitech prices new PS3 Guitar Hero controllers

Premium guitar and drums dated and priced

Logitech has announced that it’s going to be launching a premium guitar and drum kit for the PS3, to match its offerings on the Xbox 360.

The Wireless Drum Controller has “quiet, responsive” drum heads with recessed rims that deliver a “lively feel”, apparently, along with two cymbal pads. The kick pedal has a steel surface and an adjustable spring while the whole thing is powered by two AA batteries for up to 50 hours on a single charge

The guitar, on the other hand, has a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and proper metal frets. You could probably string some strings over the top of it and use it as an actual guitar, if you wanted to. There’s a touch-slider on the fretboard, too, for use in Guitar Hero World Tour.

The drum kit will be available from the start of August and cost £180 in the UK and $229 in the US. The guitar will be arriving a month later in September. That’ll also cost £180.

New season date announced

EA has confirmed that FIFA 10 will hit the high street on 2 October.

The yearly sports title will be available on the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, PS2, Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP with only Apple Mac and iPhone fans missing out.

The new game, as with previous versions, promises a stack of new features for footie fans and once again goes up against Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer.

According to EA, on the pitch critical gameplay fundamentals have been enhanced to ensure that FIFA 10 mirrors real-world football with players now moving, behaving and positioning themselves more realistically.

On attack, players analyse space more effectively, curve their runs in an attempt to stay onside, create passing lanes naturally, and drive for more variety in attacking options.

On defense, new concepts like position priority enable defenders to multitask so dangerous spaces left open by teammates out of position are covered. Plus there’s slide tackle targeting, press marking, and better-urgency clearance logic and in goal goalkeeper intelligence has been improved.

Elsewhere the 360-degree dribbling system gives players finer control of the ball, enabling them to find spaces between defenders that previously were not possible.

FIFA 10 also features a deeper iteration of the Manager Mode with more than 50 major improvements, including new match realism, realistic player transfers based on multiple decision points, and true-to-life player growth curves.
