Cyxymu not in someone’s good books
Thursday's DDoS Attacks Targeted Single User 0

More details are starting to emerge as to who was behind the DDoS attacks against Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google on Thursday.

According to reports, the DDoS attacks were aimed at silencing a pro-Georgian blogger who had been critical of Russia’s activity in the country since last year.

“Yesterday’s attack appears to be directed at an individual who has a presence on a number of sites, rather than the sites themselves,” Facebook said in a written statement.

“Specifically, the person is an activist blogger and a botnet was directed to request his pages at such a rate that it impacted service for other users.”

“The major DDoS campaign which brought Twitter to its knees yesterday (and mildly impacted the likes of Facebook, LiveJournal, Google’s Blogger and possibly YouTube service) may have actually set out to silence only one person – an anti-Russian blogger called Cyxymu from Tbilisi.” Reported security company Sophos.

On Friday Twitter, the worst affected of the sites, Twitter, confirmed that it was still working to resolve the problem.

“In the past 24 hours, we’ve been contending with a variety of attacks that continue to change in nature and intensity. We’re working to restore access to apps built on the Twitter platform that were affected by defensive measures—there was some overcompensation on our part as we tune our system to deal with this scale of attack,” said Twitter’s Biz Stone on the company blog.

Although not wanting to get into the political elements of what had happened, the founder said that the site will continue to “improve system response to these assaults such that they don’t interfere with our normal, everyday Twittering.”

Get ready to start eating
ChefStack Cooks You 200 Pancakes An Hour 0

Like pancakes? Fancy eating 200 of them in an hour? Thought you did. Well that’s what the ChefStack promises pancake fans unable to make it to their local diner or ihop.

Called the ChefStack, the machine, which is the size of a microwave oven and is easily operated without supervision, promises to cook “hot, fresh pancakes in a matter of seconds,” reads the blurb on the company’s website before going on to say that: “97% fat free pancakes emerge at a rate of up to 200 per hour.” Yikes.

The $3500 automated commercial pancake cooker isn’t probably designed for your home kitchen (man vs food anyone?), but it does, once loaded with pre-filled bags of batter, get to work to create a production line even Mr Ford would be proud of.

The best bit? That neat pile at the end ready to serve your hunger.

Hot enough for teacher?
Van Halen trailer released 0

Next up in the series of Guitar Hero games is Guitar Hero 5, but shortly after that, Guitar Hero: Van Halen will be showing up. Aiming for release in early 2010, it’ll have 25 Van Halen tracks, as well as a few others from bands like Queen, Weezer, blink-182, Foo Fighters, The Offspring and Queens of the Stone Age.

Activision has released a trailer for the game, featuring all the jump-splits and rock moves you could ever want. Looks like more Guitar Hero to us, but we were never massive Van Halen fans. Were you? If so, what’s the track you’d love to play most in GH:VH? Let us know in the comments.

New budget RIM phone offered handset-only
SIM-free BlackBerry Curve 8520 on pre-order for £239.95 0

A budget BlackBerry, the 8520 gets all the push email and messaging features you’d expect from the brand, as well as a media player, mobile web access, Wi-Fi and a 2-megapixel camera.

In addition, the Curve 8520 is the first BlackBerry to feature an “innovative” touch-sensitive trackpad, like a mini version of such interfaces on laptops.

MobileFun is currently pushing pre-order sales for the Curve 8520, offering the new handset for £239.95, which appears to undercut the competition by about a tenner.

However, The Carphone Warehouse has said it will be offering the phone in “violet” for £199.95 on Pay As You Go basis – but tied into Orange.

Futuristic device delivers over 100 beverages
Coca-Cola's "Freestyle" drinks machine 0

If you can look past the slightly staid video from BSquare, a company who had a hand in the development of the device, here we bring you – the drinks machine of the future!

The Coca-Cola “Freestyle” is a bit of a revolution as far as fizzy drinks go as it not only offers a touchscreen interface, but can mix up to 100 different drinks.

This wide variety of flavours allows for such ker-azy not-on-sale-in-shops beverage mashups as raspberry Coke and peach Fanta.

The stuff of fizzy drink-lover’s dreams, the Freestyle is live and dispensing tooth enamel-dissolving pop right now in the States.

Here in the UK you’ll have to make do with this promo clip, and just imagine how ser-weet that peach Fanta might taste on a hot, summer’s day.

Mmmmm, peeeach Faaanta…
