Highlighting features you might have missed
iPlayer gets marketing campaign 0

UK ISPs will be delighted to note that the BBC is about to embark on a marketing campaign for its iPlayer service.

The campaign will highlight special features the BBC thinks users are overlooking, in an attempt to encourage audiences “to get even more out of the hugely successful video-on-demand service”.

The TV ads will run for the next 3 weeks across BBC One and Two and are presented by telly chef James Martin.

Features highlighted are to include “Series Catch Up” and the BBC iPlayer recommendation engine.

James Martin said: “As a keen BBC iPlayer user myself, I’m delighted to be able to highlight some of the features that people might not be aware of”.

"Open source" web documentary with Sir Tim Berners-Lee
BBC Two announces "Digital Revolution" series 0

BBC Two has announced that to mark the 20th anniversary of the world wide web, it is to team up with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the web’s inventor, to look at the impact it has on our lives.

“Digital Revolution”, the project’s working title, is described as a landmark series for the broadcaster with an “open source” approach to production.

The “open source” angle comes in with the feature that web users will be given early access to the content with comment, input and story leads invited from the web community.

“After 20 years of tumultuous innovation, now feels like the right time for us to take stock of the profound change our society has undergone since the birth of the web”, said George Entwistle, controller, BBC knowledge commissioning.

“I’m delighted the BBC audience will have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in the creation of this project, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it unfold online in the months leading up to TV transmission”.

The four-part documentary series is due to be aired next year on BBC Two.

It’s around the 15 minute bit
BBC iPlayer Adds Direct Link Feature 0

The BBC has announced that it has added a new feature to the iPlayer that will let users email bookmarks of their favourite TV shows from the Beeb.

In attempt to combat the age old problem of trying to tell people where the funny bit is in a TV show, users can now send a link to an exact moment in a programme rather than just to the beginning of the show in question.

In what the Beeb clearly hope will appeal to the Twitter crowd, it has also created its own “short URL” system, it says “to save you the trouble of having to use a 3rd-party service.”

To use this new functionality, users just have to click the Programme Information link below the iPlayer video playback window to reveal the new “Send to a Friend” options.

Although not available for the BBC’s radio shows at the moment, Anthony Rose, Controller of Online Media Group and Vision at BBC says they “hope to add support for radio as soon as we can.”

Over 16 million requests for streamed content
BBC says Wimbledon broke online live video records 0

The BBC has announced that its online coverage of Wimbledon has broken its previous records for the most popular live video streams of a sporting event.

The BBC says during this year’s Wimbledon its Sport website has seen more users than ever logging on to follow the coverage online.

Across the Wimbledon fortnight, the BBC Sport website received a total of 19.3 million requests for Wimbledon content of which 16.2 million was live coverage – 3.5 times that of the year before.

But it was British hope Murray that created demand for a record breaking 2.1 million requests for Centre Court coverage on Friday as users logged on to follow the Andy Murray v Andy Roddick match online.

The BBC says this has now become the most popular single live video stream for sport, beating the previous record set during the 2008 Olympics.

In addition, the Beeb has revealed 7.5 million chose to use the Red Button service to choose which coverage to follow.
