Confirmed by CEO
Opera Software’s head honcho, Jon von Tetzchner, has confirmed that an Android version of the popular mobile browser is in development, but he didn’t disclose when it’s due.
“Yes, we are working on an Android version”, he said. The browser is currently available for Symbian and Windows Mobile users, and was blocked from the iPhone app store by Apple. However, Opera Mini is available for BlackBerry and Android phones, which reformats pages into a more “mobile-friendly” format by passing them through Opera’s servers first.
The question is whether people will use it. Windows Mobile and Symbian’s browsers are much maligned, but the webkit browsers on Android and the iPhone are more well-regarded. If Opera build it, will users come?
