UK launch event dated, phone expected shortly after
Toshiba TG01 UK Details Coming 9 July 0

Toshiba has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it will be releasing the UK launch details of its Snapdragon powered TG01 mobile phone at the beginning of July.

The phone, first announced back in February, will be the first handset to feature the Qualcomm 1Ghz Snapdragon processor and promises to take on the iPhone, Palm Pre and HTC Hero when it eventually launches in the UK.

Although Toshiba is keeping quiet on an operator launch partner, it has already teamed up with O2 in Germany following an announcement on Monday.

The Windows Mobile device, it’s based on the speedy Snapdragon platform and offers a 4.1-inch touchscreen display. In Germany it will be offered with Nimbuzz pre-loaded.

From a translated version of the O2’s German site, it appears pricing for the TG01 is a pre-payment of 20 euros followed by a 24-month contract priced at 20 euros per month.

Pocket-lint will be bringing you all the news as it happens from the 9 July launch event.

100% new music
"Amazing Radio" debuts on DAB 0

DAB radio listeners now have a new station to try out, as “Amazing Radio” has debuted on the platform this month.

Available nationwide (or, more accurately, where there’s a DAB signal) the station plays 100% new music from unsigned bands and artists.

An offshoot of the music website amazingtunes.com where, over the last four years, unsigned artists have been able to upload and sell their music – receiving 70% of the download revenue, the station is on a 6-month pilot.

While the site now offers 15,000 tracks from a variety of music genres including indie, urban, rock, jazz and pop, this is the catalogue the station can select from.

Paul Campbell, founder of amazingtunes.com and Amazing Radio, said: “It’s normally impossible for new artists to get onto big radio stations. So we made our own”.

The station also plans to feature unsigned voices as presenters and allow listeners to choose the playlists.

Firefox 3.5 release date was reported to be on June 30. If things go according to plan, the release date of Firefox 3.5 will proceed as scheduled. The question now is, “Will  Firefox 3.5 be a better browser?” We certainly hope so because there are some things that we do not like about Firefox. For [...] … More Info

Firefox

You may already be running Firefox 3.5, if you grabbed it early from Mozilla’s FTP servers, where it’s been available for a little while now, but if not, head over to Mozilla.com to update. I’ve been using the Beta and the Release Candidate versions for some time, and aside from the usual incompatibility with a few add-ons, I can tell you that 3.5 not only works great, but also packs some useful new features.

For most users, the first thing you’ll notice is how much faster Firefox 3.5 is compared with the previous version. There are a lot of reasons for the speed improvements, but one of them is the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine that is much more efficient when dealing with resource-hogging web apps. There’s a great post over at WebWorkerDaily that goes into more detail about how that works and what it means.

My personal favorite new feature is the ability to tear off tabs and move them to new windows, something which I used to have to use a plug-in to accomplish. I can’t count how many times I need to do this on a daily basis when I’m referencing something for an article, or for debugging code and HTML.

Here’s a brief list of some of the highlights of the new version to whet your appetite (and more here):

  • Private Browsing and Clear Recent History features.
  • Location aware browsing via geolocation.
  • Gecko engine 1.9.1, with many rendering process improvements.
  • HTML5, downloadable fonts and other new CSS property support, JavaScript query selectors, HTML5 offline data storage for applications, and SVG transforms.
  • Open video support, meaning that you won’t have to download any plug-ins or use external viewers to watch web video content.
  • Improvements to session restore, anti-phishing and malware, the Awesome Bar, and browser customization.
